No one likes a cluttered house or having to hunt high and low to find what they need. Thankfully, there are now a host of clever storage options available, for every room in the house. Here we show you some of the cleverest solutions for your kitchen and utility areas – so you will never have to rummage, hunt or trip over ever again.

JM Interiors

Larders are high on kitchen wish lists and have become one of today’s most sought-after pieces of furniture.

In this barn conversion kitchen in rural Headcorn, the priorities were good storage and ample work space.

For open plan kitchens where dining and socialising happens in the same room as cooking, a generous larder is a real asset. It allows you to shut the door and hide all your bottles, jars, packets and tins out of sight and off the worktops. Larders are particularly great for people who cook a lot and have many ingredients they need to access all the time. Everything can be stored in perfect order.

Our client wanted clutter-free work surfaces, opting for a double larder so they could also cleanly house small electrical items – microwave, toaster, coffee machine, food mixer etc. With a granite cold shelf and power in the back panel, the larder also becomes
a functional work station.

Collins Bespoke

Designing and making bespoke kitchens, bedroom furniture and interior cabinetry for over 20 years has meant we have had many opportunities to suggest creative storage solutions. The very popular – but, clever and useful – are the integrated cabinetry features such as spice-racks, plate-dividers, cutlery and knife holders. More recently, spaces have been made for coffee pods too!

Of all our designs, we do have one or two favourites. One is a stunning walnut kitchen, which we have just finished. This kitchen design was all about drawers, including surrounding the kitchen sink, an area that is often problematic. So, we have designed a drawer unit to fit around the drop-in sink. There is room enough for dish-brushes, soaps and scourers, and a hip-flask (the kitchen belongs to parents of small children). It has been so well-received that we have had to incorporate these in some of our more recent designs.

Above all, the fabulous advantage we have, over many kitchen designers and makers, is that we design and hand-make every kitchen we are commissioned. Therefore, we can suggest and realise clever solutions for any space, especially the complementary personalised chopping board that comes with our kitchens.

Woodwork Kitchens

This beautiful home near Brentwood has been finished to exacting standards with the owners successfully merging contemporary styling and the latest technology with more traditional designs creating a homely feel with a real wow factor.

When considering their kitchen the extensive brief included a large pantry area, with separate sections to store all the groceries in one place – no more searching in various cupboards for different ingredients.

Woodwork Traditional Handmade Furniture in Southborough designed and made these bespoke cabinets to do just that, incorporating individual drawers of various sizes to separate out different foodstuffs. Developing bespoke solutions for storage is always part of the design process at Woodwork and every kitchen is made individually to match the client’s specific needs

Burlanes

The first and most important step when planning your new kitchen is to create a layout that makes the best use of the space. The kitchen is the central point of your home where a lot of activities take place — cooking, cleaning, eating, drinking and socialising. It needs to be both beautiful and functional and storage is key!

‘Work out what’s really important to you,’ says Lindsey, Burlanes’ head designer. ‘Is it major storage? Do you dislike having anything out on the worktop? Then focus on the available space.’

Utilise an unused room with a walk-in larder. A custom-made breakfast cupboard is perfect for keeping everything neatly hidden away and with pull-out drawers for maximum storage. And the ultimate concealed storage… a hidden utility room in your kitchen.

Clever cupboards make the most of even the tiniest, awkward spaces, as shown here by this compact spice cupboard tucked into the side of the cooker alcove. Features such as slots for individual spice jars help to keep the contents
tidy and secure.

Where there is cooking, there is inevitably rubbish – so tucking your bins away under the kitchen counter is a great solution, keeping the rubbish out of sight but the bin instantly to hand.
