Sixth form is a crucial stage with decisions to be made.
We hear from two schools about how they prepare students for their onward journey
School 1: Bede’s
At Bede’s, while we focus on a joyful school experience, we also recognise the need to look to the future. We guide our pupils to make appropriate choices and applications for higher education via academic or vocational pathways.
We navigate our Sixth Form pupils every step of the way through the UCAS process to produce timely, high quality, personalised and competitive university applications. For pupils looking to study internationally or at specialist institutions, we offer tailored guidance throughout the application process. Bede’s leavers pursue a wide and diverse range of destinations, securing places at top institutions globally.
A significant number attend Russell Group universities. Reflecting our strengths, many also progress to specialist colleges for Creative and Performing Arts, such as Rambert School of Dance, various Art Foundation courses, and sports-focused degrees. The true measure of success is the diversity of subjects chosen, spanning traditional fields like Economics and Mathematics to vocational degrees like Architecture and Veterinary Nursing. We actively promote the benefits of apprenticeships, including degree level, and in recent years have seen pupils progress onto degree apprenticeships with organisations such as Ernst & Young, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Rolls Royce.
We create inspiring opportunities for pupils to engage with local and national employers from a diverse range of industries. We do this via profession focused seminars, events and trips throughout the year, and by holding our flagship annual Universities and Careers Fair.
We take time to understand each pupil’s individual strengths and qualities when exploring future career paths, to provide meaningful and bespoke career action plans throughout their Sixth Form journey. We start the UCAS application process in earnest in the Spring term of the Lower Sixth, with applications submitted by Christmas of the Upper Sixth, to ensure pupils’ applications are well researched and considered, and they have taken the opportunity to develop academic enrichment opportunities such as masterclasses, university taster seminars, work experience and industry insight events for a competitive application. We encourage pupils to attend open days where possible from April – November each year, and also to book up early!
“The UCAS Specialists at Bede’s were instrumental in my university application process. They provided comprehensive guidance, considering my academic profile, desired location, course specifics and university rankings. The teachers and Sixth Form team also offered expert advice on choosing the right universities and crafting a broad UCAS application, including crucial insurance choices. Essentially, they made sure I wasn’t just guessing.”

School 2: The Malling School
At The Malling School, we are committed to providing an engaging and ambitious curriculum that ignites a passion for learning, fosters personal growth, and prepares students for a successful future. Embracing excellence is at the heart of what we do. As the first non-fee-paying/non-grammar school in Europe to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) qualifications in our Sixth Form, we provide our students with access to the world’s premier post-16 academic qualification and the most flexible Sixth Form vocational qualification in the UK. These qualifications open doors to top universities and exciting career opportunities and develop students into well rounded young people who are ready for life after compulsory education.
In addition to these prestigious qualifications, we also recognise not all our
students fit this mould therefore, we also offer a triple BTEC in Sport. This pathway is undergoing exciting development and we hope to launch our Golf Academy in time for the next academic year. In addition to this we have a bespoke Level 2 route that accommodates a small number of pupils who have additional learning needs.
At The Malling School we pride ourselves in providing students with robust academic and pastoral support. We are fortunate to have a talented and experienced pastoral team to ensure our students reach their full potential and are in the enviable position of having two Level 6 qualified careers advisors who ensure all our KS5 students secure meaningful destinations after they leave us.
