Rowan Preparatory School’s tips for new starters
to get off to a great start
For all children:
1. Be enthusiastic about the new school year! Explore timetables, extracurricular activities and the school website or social media together so your child has events and activities to look forward to.
2. Familiarise them with the journey by walking or driving past the school during the holidays.
3. Involve them in back-to-school shopping, letting them choose items like a water bottle, pencil case, and snacks.
4. A week before school begins, start adjusting bedtimes and establishing a consistent morning routine. Take advantage of opportunities to visit the school, whether for social events, sports fixtures, or parent meetings. At Rowan, we help new families connect with current ones before term starts, fostering early friendships for girls and parents.
5. Make the first day special with a celebratory breakfast.
6. Give your child time to settle into their routine before committing to clubs or wraparound care.
For younger children:
7. Home visits are organised for girls joining Rowan in Preschool to get to know their families and to assist with the girls’ transition.
For older children:
8. Encourage open conversations about feelings and reassure them that it’s normal to feel nervous.
9. Remind them that building friendships takes time. Rowan promotes connections through co-curricular activities and multiple transition events. Teachers encourage inclusive play, respect, and kindness, helping children of all ages build strong, empathetic relationships.
