Sign Language Level 1

This is a one year-course leading to the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. At the end of the course students should be able to: • Greet Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) and communicate about familiar day-to-day topics including the weather, transport and directions (incorporating use of numbers) • Communicate with Deaf people using BSL about people, animals and objects in the home • Communicate with Deaf people in BSL about interests and activities using numbers in relation to age, time, money and calendar • Communicate with Deaf people in BSL about school, college or work including directions and refreshments and using numbers in relation to time and calendar.

There are three units and each unit is assessed by means of a short one-to-one conversation with the tutor which will be videoed and sent to Signature for final judgement. There will be assigned days for the three assessments during course hours. Dates, which cannot be altered, will be advised by the tutor. You will need to practice your BSL regularly outside of the classroom – the tutor will give advice on opportunities to do this.

 

Textiles – Create Machine Embroidery Samples City & Guilds Level 1 Award

This course is suitable for anyone looking to expand their sewing skills and creative potential through machine embroidery. It is designed to take you through the processes involved in creating simple samples using designs of your own as inspiration. Machine embroidery can be used to enhance all other forms of sewing from home furnishings to dressmaking, quilting and can also be incorporated into textile art. Exploration and experimentation are part of this course as a wide range of fabrics, stitches and materials will be explored to create individual results.

Your work is evaluated and monitored during the course and a certain amount of written work and homework is required. There is no exam, but continuous assessment takes place before samples, written work and research is presented for grading at the end of the course.

A degree of commitment and homework is expected as design work and samples need to be documented and presented. At the end of the course and completion of the coursework you will recieve a City and Guilds Level 1 award.

 

Teaching Assistant – Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate OCR Level 2

Location, time & cost: St Faiths Adult Education Centre, Maidstone, 9.30am-12pm, £695

This Level 2 Teaching Assistant course aims to enable students to acquire essential knowledge, understanding and skills to reflect good practice in a Teaching Assistant role. On successful completion you will gain a national qualification to enable you to qualify as a Teaching Assistant. The course will consist of the following mandatory units: Child and young person development; Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people; Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults; Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people; Help improve own and team practice in schools; Maintain and support relationships with children and young people; Support children and young people’s health and safety; Support children and young people’s positive behaviour; Support learning activities and Schools as organisations. There will be one optional unit which will be discussed with you at the beginning of the course. Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours a week working on course assignments in addition to the course hours in the classroom and those in any school placement throughout the course. Successful students will gain an OCR Level 2 Certificate in Supported Teaching and Learning in Schools (scheme code: 04465).

 

Counselling Skills Certificate CPCAB Level 2

This Counselling Skills Certificate CPCAB Level 2 (CSK-2) course in Ashford forms the first stage in professional counselling training. It will provide a foundation for anyone who uses counselling skills at work or in other roles. It will enable you to develop a range of counselling skills, ethically and safely. The course covers self-awareness and self-reflection in the helping role, the establishment of boundaries, understanding diversity and active listening. Successful completion of the course will mean that you will be able to: • Demonstrate an understanding of working with others within an ethical framework • Establish and sustain the boundaries of the helping role in practice • Work empathetically as a helper, focussing on the helpee’s needs and concerns • Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction • Demonstrate the use of reflection and feedback to enhance counselling skills.
