The Duke of York’s Royal Military School explains how they inspire a love of books

In an age dominated by digital devices and ever-shortening attention spans, fostering a genuine love for reading in young people is both a challenge and a priority. At The Duke of York’s Royal Military School (DOYRMS), while all students are provided with a laptop free of charge, cultivating a lifelong reading habit remains one of the most powerful tools for academic success and personal development.

All Year 7 students benefit from dedicated weekly English lessons held in our fully resourced, library. This immersive environment provides the perfect space to explore literature in a meaningful way, encouraging intellectual curiosity. It is home to over 8,000 carefully curated items. Whether exploring modern poetry, diving into a gripping historical novel, or researching a scientific theory, they are surrounded by materials which inspire curiosity and critical thinking.

The library is managed by a full-time, qualified School Librarian, who also serves as the school’s Careers Leader. Students receive guidance choosing books that spark their interest and also help selecting texts that align with their academic goals. A wide array of newspapers and magazines keep students connected to both academic topics and current events.

This focus on literacy is just one part of what makes DOYRMS a truly exceptional place to learn. As a top 5% school nationally with students making outstanding progress at GCSE, an impressive 95% of our graduates progress to university – of which 40% go on to prestigious Russell Group institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge.
