Bursaries at Reigate Grammar School change lives and build futures

Reigate Grammar School (RGS), the leading coeducational day school in Surrey, is dedicated to providing top-tier education while ensuring financial accessibility for all students. With a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1675 as a ‘free school’, RGS has consistently upheld social mobility as a core value.

Over the years, RGS has raised over £11.5 million to fund life-changing bursaries. The school’s innovative approach includes the Nightingale Bursaries for families of NHS staff and STEM bursaries for students aspiring to careers in science or medicine. Recently, RGS introduced Humanitarian Bursaries to support children fleeing conflict zones such as Ukraine and Syria.

Currently, 150 students benefit from RGS’s bursary scheme, with support ranging from 40% up to 110% of fees. The major bursaries can include support for food, travel, uniforms, and even the cost of an overseas educational trip, allowing students to fully embrace the school experience. The school aims to double this number, reaching 30 percent of its student body, through the ambitious “Changing Lives, Building Futures” campaign. With a target fund of £20 million, RGS is dedicated to expanding support available. The Early Bursary process helps identify and nurture talented pupils from local primary schools, offering them early admission to foster their academic and personal growth.

“Our vision is to be able to offer any child a place at RGS, no matter their background,” says Foundation Director Jonny Hylton. “Through the Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign, we seek support to provide first-class educational opportunities for children whose potential is far greater than their financial means.”

RGS has a variety of income streams for bursaries, including alumni giving, profits from their international schools, and contributions from numerous individuals, companies, and partners who support their philanthropic work.

In 2025, RGS will celebrate its 350 year anniversary, launching a decade of philanthropic celebration in partnership with the wider Reigatian community, aimed at securing a sustainable and ambitious future. This ethos is championed by Headmaster Shaun Fenton, whose passion for the bursary programme and community partnerships ensures that RGS’s exceptional education is accessible to those who may not have the financial means.

Reigate Grammar School is committed to diversity and inclusion, recognising the value of different perspectives and backgrounds in enriching the educational experience. The school welcomes applications from families of all financial circumstances and encourages those who may benefit from financial assistance to explore the bursary options available.

For more information please visit the RGS website or contact the admissions office directly.  There will be an Open Morning on Saturday 28 September.
