Millfield Prep School – known for its sporting achievements – tells us how its pupils get to discover their sporting interests while also building  academic strengths

Millfield Prep School has the unique ability to operate individual sporting programmes for children to thrive and discover what they are good at and passionate about. Timetables are bespoke to individuals based on interests, allowing pupils to participate in sport and activities before, during or after school, for them to realise their full potential.

Children don’t have to specialise early, and are encouraged to try everything in a positive, non-committal environment. It is possible to play tennis full-time, swim up to eight times per week, ride or play golf, and still participate in regular team sports.

Year 8 Jess participates in two morning co-curricular sessions (choir and concert rehearsal), three co-curricular lunchtime sessions (Speech and Drama, concert rehearsal and Junior Maths Challenge) and five after school sport sessions (athletics twice, games, hockey and trampolining, including a back-to-back session on Friday after school). All of this contributes to her passion for football, having recently achieved her ISFA cap.

Year 7 Barney has one early morning hockey session, three lunchtime sessions (football, golf and hockey) and four after school sessions (athletics, filmmaking and music tech club, golf and cricket), which shows the variety of interests of our pupils.

All pupils are taught a balanced programme, which includes a minimum of five hours of sport per week, alongside academic study and the arts – ensuring pupils receive a well-rounded education that gives them the opportunity, time and space to discover their brilliance.

Sport is supported by industry-leading coaches and outstanding facilities including a 25-metre swimming pool, golf courses, science centre, music halls, tennis bubble and numerous sports pitches.

Pupils choose Millfield Prep for the balance of sport and academics. Every pupil represents the school on a regular basis, with 349 pupils (95.8%) representing the school in 24 different sports in the spring term alone.

During one term, in swimming 38 pupils competed at IAPS, 40 at county competitions, 12 on county pathways and two in national programmes. Four boys played academy football, and a further three boys and one girl were selected for the Southwest ISFA team. Hockey boys became the U12 National Champions and U11, U12 and U13 teams were all county champions, and the girls are Somerset indoor champions and West finalists. This level of competition is likened to academy level sport and builds experience and resilience within our pupils.
