Linda Carter’s Hastings retreat has provided her and her family with a convenient coastal bolt hole, not too far from their main home in Kilndown. Filled with finds that she has tracked down at French brocantes over the years, Linda has transformed this former run-down fisherman’s cottage into a simple, yet chic, holiday rental for visitors to the town to enjoy.

TEST In the kitchen, Linda took out all the high units which opened out the room dramatically. “We were only going to use the cottage as a holiday home so we really didn’t need all the kitchen storage of a home kitchen,” she says. Cost was a consideration and so the old pine surfaces were given a new lease of life with a coat or two of Farrow & Ball black floor paint
