Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach Charlotte Lau homes in on the benefits of hydrating before you caffeinate
By May, life feels fuller. Social plans return, gardens demand attention, diaries begin to brim. It’s a beautiful time of year… but also a busy one.
This month’s simple shift is almost effortless: drink a glass of water before your first coffee.
After 7-8 hours of sleep, your body wakes naturally dehydrated. Reaching straight for caffeine can mask thirst and place extra demand on your nervous system. Starting your day with water first is a small act of support that sets a steadier tone and helps your body wake up gently. I’ll admit, as a big coffee lover, this was hard at first…but even one glass of water before my morning cup made a noticeable difference to my energy and focus.
Why it matters…
Proper hydration supports energy levels, concentration, digestion, skin health and temperature regulation. Even mild dehydration can contribute to fatigue, headaches, and sluggish digestion… symptoms many people mistakenly attribute to just being busy.
Drinking water first thing also:
Supports metabolism: your body begins processing nutrients and calories more efficiently.
Boosts mental clarity: dehydration can make you feel foggy or irritable, and a glass of water helps your brain switch on.
Improves mood: hydration influences stress hormones, helping you start the day feeling calmer.
Supports digestion: starting your day hydrated helps your digestive system work more efficiently and can make meals feel easier to process.
Starting with water ensures caffeine works with your body rather than masking early signs of dehydration.
How to try it:
Keep a glass or your favourite water bottle by your bed. Add a squeeze of lemon, for a little flavour.
Drink it while you take a quiet moment or include it in your morning movement routine.
Why now?
May brings longer days, warmer temperatures, and busier routines. Gardening, walking, or simply being outdoors increases fluid needs. This tiny habit provides a foundation for steady energy and helps your mornings feel calmer and more focused.
3 easy ways to remember:
1. Keep water in sight: Place a glass or bottle where you’ll see it first thing, like your bedside table or kitchen counter.
2. Make it your morning ritual: Drink your water before checking your phone, opening emails, or pouring coffee. Treat it as the gentle first step of your day.
3. Celebrate small wins: Track it for a week or notice how your body feels afterwards. Seeing the difference in energy or focus reinforces the habit.
