Sarah Maxwell explores bone density as she chats to OsteoStrong’s Ryan Ashford-Smit
In the UK, approximately 22% of women and 7% of men over 50 have osteoporosis. Women are at far greater risk, as menopause causes a rapid drop in oestrogen, accelerating bone loss. Peak bone mass occurs in our early 30s, with a typical loss of 1-3% annually after 50.
In a recent meeting, Ryan Ashford-Smit, explained what his Tunbridge Wells-based OsteoStrong centre is doing to change the way we approach the crippling affliction.
What is OsteoStrong?
OsteoStrong is a dedicated longevity centre offering an advanced approach to strengthening the body in a way that traditional exercise cannot match. Using a technology called Osteogenic Loading, it triggers the body’s natural ability to build stronger bones, muscles and joints.
Do I have to spent hours a week doing this?
No, each weekly session takes only around 15 minutes, with no sweating, straining or gym clothing required.
Who is it for?
It is ideal for men and women who want to stay strong as they age and is particularly valuable for people living with osteopenia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, back pain or poor balance.
Many members have adopted this as part of their ongoing preventative and restorative health routine. Others, including athletes, rely on it to enhance performance and reduce injury risk. This is a program that has a suitable option for people of all ages and abilities.
What is Osteogenic loading and what are the benefits?
Osteogenic loading works by allowing for brief, controlled forces to the body that are significantly higher than those created during traditional exercise, yet delivered in a safe and efficient way. This stimulates the growth of new bone tissue and supports improvements in overall musculoskeletal strength. For many, it provides a natural and non-invasive route to rebuilding the body from the inside out.
Do I have to have a bone scan before I come to see you?
A bone health journey always begins with understanding your baseline, which is why OsteoStrong offers bone scans. This is especially important for women, as they can be in excellent health and still lose up to 25 per cent of their bone density during menopause without realising it.
Does OsteoStrong offer any other treatments?
Alongside Osteogenic loading, the centre offers complementary wellness treatments, including Whole Body Vibration, PEMF therapy, Compression Therapy and Red Light Therapy, each designed to support recovery, mobility and overall wellbeing.
Are there other OsteoStrong centres in the UK?
The Tunbridge Wells centre is one of over 200 centres around the world, and is the first and only centre in the UK, with a rollout planned to other areas soon.
